How Authority Can Build or Break Credibility Instantly

May 30, 2025

How often do you make decisions without second-guessing simply because someone “in charge” told you it was the right move?

Whether it’s trusting a doctor’s diagnosis, buying a product based on an expert’s recommendation, or following the lead of someone in a suit at a crosswalk—chances are, the influence of authority has shaped your decisions far more than you realize.

As a founding member of the Cialdini Institute, and one of fewer than 250 professionals globally licensed and certified to speak, coach, and train on Dr. Robert Cialdini’s Principles of Influence, I’ve witnessed firsthand how the principle of authority—when used ethically—can increase persuasion, build credibility, and transform the way leaders lead.

But this power is a double-edged sword. When misunderstood or misused, it can lead to blind obedience, catastrophic decisions, and lost trust.

In this growth insights newsletter, we’ll unpack the science of authority, explore eye-opening research studies, and offer practical strategies to help you use this principle to lead, sell, and communicate more effectively—with integrity.

PART 1: AUTHORITY ISN’T ABOUT POSITION—IT’S ABOUT PERCEPTION

Let’s begin with a simple but powerful question:

How important is persuasion in your life?

Whether you're leading a team, growing a business, or raising a family—your ability to ethically influence others is essential.

Authority is one of the most effective tools in your influence toolkit. But here’s the twist: it often works before you even open your mouth.

Insight:

People are neurologically wired to defer to those they perceive as experts. The more someone appears to be an authority—through credentials, titles, attire, or even a powerful introduction—the more likely others are to follow them without resistance.

Take, for example, a compelling jaywalking study. Researchers had a man cross the street against the signal in two outfits: once in jeans and a t-shirt, and another time in a business suit. When dressed in a suit, 350% more people followed him.

Why? The suit activated our subconscious trust in “authority,” even in a situation as irrational as jaywalking.

“Dress for success” isn’t just motivational fluff—it’s a real psychological lever that activates compliance.

*Side note...I know this and yet I choose to wear my denim on denim on denim "uniform." But hey, that's my brand!

PART 2: THE DARK SIDE OF AUTHORITY—WHEN OBEDIENCE OVERRIDES JUDGMENT

While authority can inspire positive action, it can also lead people to surrender critical thinking altogether.

One of the most chilling examples comes from a study involving nurses. They received a phone call instructing them to administer a medication that was:

  • Unapproved

  • Delivered against hospital policy

  • Instructed at double the recommended dosage

  • Ordered by a doctor the nurse had never met

Despite these red flags, 95% of the nurses complied—until they were stopped just short of administering the drug.

Why? They weren’t responding to logic or protocol. They were responding to a perceived authority.

Now consider the infamous Milgram Experiment. Participants were told to administer electric shocks to another person for every incorrect answer in a supposed memory test. What they didn’t know was that the shocks weren’t real—and the “learner” was an actor.

Even when the actor screamed in pain or mentioned heart conditions, 66% of participants continued delivering shocks up to 450 volts, simply because a man in a white coat told them to.

“Under the influence of an authority figure, people are capable of committing acts they would normally find abhorrent.”

Let that sink in.

Have you ever done something against your better judgement because someone of "authority" told you to even though you knew it wasn't the right thing to do?

PART 3: THE SCIENCE BEHIND WHY AUTHORITY WORKS

Authority works by creating cognitive shortcuts. When people are overwhelmed, uncertain, or under pressure, they often “outsource” their decision-making to those they perceive as more knowledgeable.

In one study, couples were asked to reflect on hypothetical financial hardships. Their brains lit up with activity—until they were introduced to a “financial planner” with impressive-sounding credentials.

Once this stranger was framed as an expert, brain scans flatlined. Critical thinking shut down.

Why? Because people trust authority—and authority can be manufactured with nothing more than a good introduction.

Key Insight: You don’t need decades of experience to be perceived as an authority—you need the right introduction, the right context, and the right presentation of credibility.

PART 4: THE 3 BIGGEST MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WITH AUTHORITY

Now that we understand the power, let’s explore where people often go wrong:

❌ Mistake #1: Introducing Yourself

Saying “I’m a best-selling author, expert consultant, and highly respected in my field…” comes off as arrogant, even if it’s true.

✅ Solution: Let someone else introduce you. When someone your audience respects vouches for your credibility, your authority skyrockets.

❌ Mistake #2: Highlighting the Wrong Credentials

Just because you’re a world champion in something doesn’t mean it’s relevant to your topic.

✅ Solution: Only share credentials that matter to your audience and the moment.

❌ Mistake #3: Underestimating the Power of Timing

A great introduction loses power if it’s given too early (and forgotten), or too late (after people have already formed opinions).

✅ Solution: If you’re meeting one-on-one or virtually, have someone send an intro email 5 minutes before the call. This primes your audience with respect before the conversation even begins.

PART 5: BUILDING ETHICAL AUTHORITY—THE RIGHT WAY

It’s not enough to be perceived as an expert—you must be one. Here’s how to ethically build your authority:

1. Earn It Before You Need It

Write, speak, and share insights regularly. Become known for something before you ask for influence.

2. Get Endorsed by Real Authorities

A glowing testimonial from 10,000 people is great—but a single endorsement from someone your audience respects carries even more weight.

3. Ask for Advice, Not Reviews

When you ask someone, “Can I get your feedback?” they respond passively. But if you ask, “Can I get your advice?” you trigger their identity as an expert—and triple the likelihood they’ll comply.

PART 6: REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR LEADERS, COACHES, AND ENTREPRENEURS

Take a few minutes to reflect on these questions:

  • Where am I relying on position rather than perceived authority?

  • How am I being introduced to new clients, partners, or audiences?

  • What credentials or achievements do I talk about that may not actually matter to my audience?

  • Who holds authority in the eyes of my ideal customer—and how can I ethically leverage that relationship?

PART 7: FINAL THOUGHTS—LEAD WITH AUTHORITY, LIVE WITH INTEGRITY

Authority is one of the most powerful levers of influence available to you.

But with power comes responsibility.

As a certified speaker, coach, and trainer of Dr. Cialdini’s work—and as someone who’s been deeply mentored in the psychology of ethical persuasion—I believe your authority should serve others, not manipulate them.

Whether you’re leading a team, closing a deal, or building a brand, remember this:

“People don’t just buy what you sell. They buy why they should listen to you in the first place.”

So build your authority. Own your expertise. But do it with honesty, clarity, and purpose.
